The quadrature encoders are coming along pretty well. I used old PS/2 mouse bits. Rather then interfacing to the PS/2 mouse chip, I just pulled the encoders off the mouse. I was a bit leary of the PS/2 protocol but I found a nice reference on the Arduino playground that I wish I had found earlier.
